Donald Trump needs to take action against Russian aggression within the first 100 days of his presidency or the North American Treaty Organization alliance will be in jeopardy, according to a former NATO secretary general.
Anders Fogh Rasmussen, secretary-general from 2009 to 2014, said Russian President Vladimir Putin "only respects a firm and steady hand," according to the Daily Mail.
Rasmussen urged the U.S. to increase NATO support and to set up more military bases to counter Russia's aggression against Baltic states and to protect Ukraine.
"Neglecting them will have far-reaching consequences and mark the beginning of the end of the U.S.-led system," Rasmussen said, according to the Daily Mail.
NATO's current leader and other top officials called on Trump to clarify his position on the alliance. In July, Trump said that other NATO members were not paying their share for the U.S.'s protection.
In October, the Daily Mail reported Britain planned to deploy troops, tanks, and jets to Estonia as deterrents to Russian actions in the area.
